505 Ave S Lubbock, Texas

William Clinton Garrett, my great grandfather, owned this home. I’m not sure when he purchased it, but my Aunt Edna Stephenson McCoy wanted to buy it from him sometime in the 1940s and he was willing to sale it to her. However, her husband, Monte McCoy would not sign the papers to buy it. In those days and especially in farm families the husband was the ruler. Her Stephenson family also wanted her to be able to buy the house so they devised a plan. Her brother William Nathan Stephenson would buy the house using my Aunt Edna’s money. A few months later he would deed the house to my Aunt Edna.

This was the same house that I lived in with my Aunt Edna and cousin, Robena, in the 1964-1965 school year at Texas Tech University. It was my freshman year in college. My cousin, Robena, still owns this home in March of 2020, though it is now a rental for her and the house was moved to a differnt location after the 1970 Lubbock tornado.
