Abraham (John Stephenson(1)), a son of John and Elizabeth Edwards Stephenson, lived in Isle of Wight Co., VA. He married Ann, whose surname is unknown(20). On 6 december 1725 Abraham and Ann, his wife, sold to Thomas Stephenson 100 acres on Seacock Swamp in Isle of Wight Co, VA(21). On 23 november 1730 Abraham appraised the estate of Edward Brown(22). Nine years later he relocated south of the Virginia state border into Bertie Co., NC, where he bought 150 acres on the south side of "Maherring" River adjoining the lands of William Boon, John Bryant, and a Mr. Bennet from Elias Fort on 23 October 1739(23). This land would later fall into Northampton County when it was formed from Bertie in 1741. About a month later, on 4 November 1739, Elias Forst sold Abraham 147 acres on the south side of the "Maherring" River at Island Gutt on Mouth of "Myerry", and the Old County Line(24). Bertie County's county line changed, and next Abraham Stephenson was found living in Northampton County, where he was selling the 150 acres that he bought from Elias Fort in October of 1739(25). Between 1739 and 1761, Abraham was mentioned in several northampton County deeds, bet he did not sell any more of his land until he gave his son Abraham Stephenson, Jr., as a "deed of gift," land on the south side of the "Meheron" River, joining "Miry" Branch and old the county line, on 28 August 1761(26). Abraham gave his son Arthur, as a "deed of gift," three Negroes, George, Sail, and Sedler, on 1 August 1762. Abraham's son Abraham Stephenson, Jr. and Arthur's son Arthur Stephenson, Jr. witnessed this deed.(27). Soon thereafter Abraham disappeared from the Northampton County deed books. No will or estate has been located on this Abraham Stephenson. His only proved children were the two sons to whom he gave land and slaves in 1761 and 1762, Abraham and Arthur Stephenson.

History of Virginia Land Grants
Land grants, or patents, were granted by the Virginia Company, which was granted a chcarter by the Crown to colonize Virginia. The Virginia Company was authorized to grant land patents, and copies were maintained in the records of the Virginia Company in England. One copy of the patent was given to the patentee, to produce in the event of a dispute as to ownership or to provide to the new owner when land was transferred by deed. upon the death of the patentee, the patent passed to his heirs. In 1620, as an additional safeguard, the virginia Company decided to maintain a duplicate of the patent in Virginia, and copies are now maintained in the Virignia Land Office.
In order to encourage immigration and settlement of the colony, the Virginia Company provided that any person who paid his own way to Virginia or paid for the transportation of another person would be entitled to a grant of 50 acres of land for each such person. The person so transported to Virginia was knows as a "headright". See the Introduction to Cavalilers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, 1623 - 1800 (1934) ("Cavalilers and Pioneers"), Vol. I, p. xi. The grant of 145 acres to Abraham Stephenson in 1715 (item 1 under Virginia deeds and Land Grants above) was an example of this type of grant.
The land in Pamunkey Neck and on the south side of the Blackwater River, including the area of Abraham's 1715 patent, was originally allocated by treaty to the Indians in 1677 for their exclusive use. However, leases of land were granted by the Indians to white settlers, and other settlers took possession of part of this land, in violation of the treaty. A committee of the House of Burgesses was formed to study the title disputes that resulted between white settlers and various Indian tribes and, in 1699, isssed a report that white settlers should be granted land in this area and that title to certain land previously occupied by white settlers should be confirmed by land patents. See Report by the Committee for Examing Claims to Land in Pamunkey Neck, and on the South Side of Wlackwater Swamp, and to Consider of the Most Proper Meanes to Settle the Northern & Southern Bounds of Virginia, dated June, 1699, transcribed in Virginia Colonial Records, English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records, Patents (The Learning Company 2001).
History of the Development of Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties
Isle of Wight County was created in 1637 and originally included what is now Southampton County. Southampton County was created in 1749, and the dividing line between Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties is the Blackwater River. The land grant to Abraham and the other land described under Virginia deeds and Land Grants above was located just west of the Black water River in present Southampton County.

Janse "Jenk" Stephenson - (1682) I copied this from the Sophie Fields family tree (Ancestry.com) on September 29, 2016. This is the first time I have found the name "Jenk" used in any official record to the family other than my one name "Jenk". But I did hear of my father speak of "Jenk Stephenson" in referring to my great grandfather, Jenkins Stephenson. This Abraham would be my 6th great grandfather.

Thomas ((John Stephenson(1)), a son of John and Elizabeth Edwards Stephenson, was born in Isle of Wight Co., VA. He witnessed a will for Thomas Dowles on 19 February 1720(111). He bought 100 acres on Seacock Swamp from his brother Abraham Stephenson on 6 December 1725. Thomas witnessed a deed for Nehemiah Joyner and his wife on 16 May 1729 in Isle of Wight Co., VA(112). Around 1749, Isle of Wight County split, and Southampton County was formed. After the formation of Southampton County, several of John and Elizabeth Edwards Stephenson's descendants were found living in Southampton County, including their son, Thomas. Thomas wrote his will 7 Dec 1768, and it was probated on 8 Feb 1770 in Southampton County's Court. He mentioned his wife Ellizabeth and his eight children, Willliam, Esther, Celah, James, Thomas, John Mathew, Jane, Elizabeth Stephenson(113). More research is needed to determine if this Thomas was the son of John and Elizabeth Edwards Stephenson.

General Notes: **The following information was taken from Rebecca Leach Ddozier's book, "Twelve Northhampton County, North Carolina Families 1650-1850, published by Gateway Press, INC., Baltimore, MD 2004; page 326-327:
John, ((John(1)), son of John and Elizabeth Edwards Stephenson, was born about 1680/90 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. He married first a Miss Hayes, daughter of Peter Hayes, prior to 1720(9). He married second Catherine Wiggs, a daughter of Henry and Catherine Luke Wiggs(10). John, Jr. was first seen in Isle of Wight County in 1712 buying 162 acres(11). He was seen again in the 1723 Isle of Wight deed books when he bought land from Edward Boykins on 25 Jan 1723(12). He wrote his will 24 Feb 1728/29, and it was registered in Isle of Wight Court on 23 Nov 1737(13). John left his sons John III and Peter five schillings and "no more." He left to his son William 104 acres, to his son Solomon his plantation, 162 acres, and several personal items, and to his son George 1500 pounds of tobacco, which was to be paid to him when he turned 18 years of age. john left to his daughters Mary and Elizabeth Stephenson some livestock and several household items. his wife Catherine was to have lifetime right to the rest of his estate during her widowhood. after her death or remarriage John's estate was to be divided into five equal shares. Catherine Wiggs Stephenson lived until 1753(14). She wrote her will in 1750 in Southampton County where she supposesdly was living with her son Solomon Stephenson. Her will was probated in Southampton County's March Court, in 1753(15). She did not mention the sons by John's marriage to Miss Hayes, John III and Peter, but she did name her four children, Mary, Elizabeth, George, and Solomon. John and Catherine's daughters married between 1729, when their father wrote his will referring to them by their maiden names, and 1750, when their mother wrote her will referring to them by their married names, Mary Matthews and Elizabeth Matthews. No data was located on John's sons, John III or William Stephenson(16). John's son Peter Stephenson lived in Southampton Co., VA., and his will was registered on 12 Feb 1761(17). John and Catherine's son George died in Southampton, and his will was registered on 9 June 1774(18). Their daughters Mary Matthews and Elizabeth Matthews lived in Southampton Co., VA.,; according to several researchers, they eventually moved to North Carolina(19).
The Stephenson family from Isle of Wight Co., VA probably never moved to Southampton Co., VA.; instead, they found themselves living in that county because of the readjustment of the Isle of Wight Co., VA county lines in 1749.
