[The age of the oldest male in the 1820 and 1830 censuses is inconsistent with the age of the oldest male in the 1786 NH census and the 1800 Federal census, suggesting that the William in those later censuses was a different William. In addition, the 1830 Federal census for Elijah Stephenson (see Census Records under notes for Elijah) includes a white male and a white female, both age 60-69, in Elijah’s household. They are probably William and his wife Penelope. See also deed 9 above.]
Tax Records:
In the 19th century, Northampton County taxpayers were listed by districts, corresponding to the militia districts. A map prepared about 1860 shows the location of these districts. Most Stephensons were in District 4, north of the road through Martin’s Crossroads (present Conway) and to the west of District 7; District 5, south of the road through Martin’s Crossroads and west of District 8; District 6, north of District 7 and to the Virginia border; District 7, south of the road through Martin’s Crossroads and incudibng the head of Patty’s Delight near where the land grants of Arthur (d 1792) were located; and District 12, in the northeast corner of the county adjoining the Meherrin River. Jesse, son of Arthur (d. 1823) also owned land in District 8, north of the road through Martin’s Crossroads and south of Corduroy Swamp and Kirby Creek where some of the land owned by Arthur Sr. was located, and Jesse’s brother Abraham appears also to have owned land in District 11, east of District 8 and to the border with Hertford County. The road dividing Districts 4 and 5 and Districts 7 and 8, which is shown as Bennet’s road on the map, was probably located about where present Route 158 through Conway is now located.
In some cases it appears that information was incorrectly entered or omitted in the tax lists. Land values stated for tax purposes do not necessarily represent the fair market value of the land
It is assumed that the William Sr. in the following tax lists was William, the son of Arthur Jr.
1. 1823 Tax List (District 5): William Stevenson Sr., below Elijah Stevenson-1 black poll; 549 acres of land valued at $1,644.
2. 1824 Tax List (District 5): William Stevenson Sr., four below Elijah Stevenson-1 black poll; 549 acres valued at $1,644.

62. Jenkins Stephenson (Abraham36, Arthur Sr.17, Abraham Sr.3, (William) John Jr.2, John Sr.1) was born in 1777 in Northampton County North Carolina, USA and died before 1812-Mar 1815 in Northampton County North Carolina, USA. {FSID: 9F4N-GM6}
General Notes: Jenkins [Abraham(4), Arthur (3), Abraham(2), John Stephenson(1)], a son of Abraham and Mary Jenkins Stephenson, was born around 1777 in Northampton, Co., NC. He supposedly married Martha (Patsy) Jenkins about 1800, in Ahoskie, in Hertford Co., NC.(76) According to Gilbert T. Stephenson's family history, Jenkins and Martha lived in Conway, Northampton County. Jenkins' father Abraham deeded him a gift of 125 acres of land on 27 August 1810. This land joned the lands of Patty's Delight, Abraham Stephenson (his father), and Etheldred Martin (brother-in-law's father).(77) A few months later, on 10 November 1810, Jenkins' father (Abraham) deeded him 170 acres as a gift. These 170 acres joined the lands of Abram Wall, Thomas Martin (Jenkins' brother-in-law), Etheldred Martin (Thomas' father), and Patty's Delight. By 15 November 1815, Jenkins' wife, Martha, was married to Isham Odom.(78) The Northampton Co., NC marriage records show that Isom married on 7 December 1812, so Jenkins was deceased before December of 1812,(79) but his land wasn't divided among his children until 17 June 1828.(80). Martha Jenkins Stephenson Odom died prior to 8 June 1826.(81) Jenkins and Martha's children according to his land division were Littleberry, Burkett, Sallyl, Charity and Matilda Stephenson. According to Gilbert T. Stephenson's family history records, Jenkins was buried near his father in the private Stephenson cemetery near their hope place. Gilbert T. Stephenson had the following to say about Jenkins Stephenson:
"Jenkins. Oldest son of Abraham.
Married in Hertford County near Ahoskie. Farmer. Slaveholder.
Married Patsy Jenkins. Lived where Conway now is. Children named Charity (Bill Garris' wife), Sallie (married Wade Garris), Matilda (married Amos Vick), Burkett (married Betsey Newsom) Buried......."
(76)Northampton Co., DB 17, p. 163; This deed proved a Martha was the wife of Jenkins Stephenson, but by 1815 had remarried to an Isom/Isham Odom. The fact that martha was a Jenkins was found in Gilbert T. Stephenson's family information. No legal proof or a Bible has been found to prove that martha's surname was Jenkins. Date of marriage was determined based on their children's birth dates.

The following information was provided by Alan C. Stephenson, from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, March 25, 2010:
Alan C. Stephenson says he was born between 1780 -1785 and died March 1815.
Notes for Jenkins Stephenson:
Jenkins’ birth date is estimated based on the 1810 Federal census and the estimated birth date of his brother Arthur. See Census Records below and the introductory note in the Notes for Arthur (d. 1823).
Information as to the place of Jenkins’ marriage is based on research notes of Gilbert T. Stephenson (date unknown); not independently verified. These notes state that Jenkins lived where Conway now is.
As indicated by the estate records, Jenkins was an educated man who appears to have studied law. See the list of it4ems in his estate, which included a book of justice (item 2). Minutes of the Northampton County Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions show that Jenkins was a justice of the court at the time of his death.
Estate Records:
1. Jenkins died intestate. Benjamin Stephenson, his brother, was appointed administrator of his estate. See bond dated September 5, 1815, signed by Benjamin Stevenson, Arthur Stevenson and Winborn Odom.
2. Inventory dated March 18, 1815, includes various farm implements and tools, one riding cart and wheels, 8 cattle, 4 horses, 4 sheep, a dozen geese, 9 hogs, a gun, powder horn and shot, two razors and stroops, a parcel of books, a candle stand, two ink stands, a compass, a slate, a silver watch, a large and small trunk, a chest, 3 beds and furniture, a cupboard, a table, chairs, earthen plates, a sugar box, an umbrella, a cradle, 2 sleighs and harnesses, saddles, pots and pans including a cooking glass, frying pan, skillet and tea kettle, a blowing horn, 2 basins, 2 pewter plates, knivesw and forks, 2 bowls, a spice mortar, 2 bread trays, a cow bell, 3 spinning wheels and vegetables including corn.
A report of the sale of estate property dated September 20, 1815, shows Martha, Arthur, Charles, John and Benjamin Stevenson, and several members of Jenkins family, among others, purchased items, which included a book of justice, a book of arithmetic, a hymn book, a bible, a woman’s saddle, a brandy barrel, silver-plated spoons, a shot gun and a man’s saddle.
3. At the 1815 Spring Term of the Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Jenkins’ widow, Martha, petitioned for her dower rights to a portion of 170 acres of land, adjoining Benjamin Stevenson, Etheldred Martin, Thomas Martin and others included in Jenkins estate, and requested that Winborn Odom be appointed to determine a proper division of the land between Martha and Jenkins’ five minor children (under the age of 21), Sally, Burket, Charity, Matilda, and Deberry [sic-other records show his name as Littleberry] for whom a guardian had not been appointed. The petition stated that Jenkins died in March 1815.
On November 17, 1815, a jury that included Zaccheus Martin, Arthur Davis, Nathan Britten, John Martin, Etheldred Martin and others awarded Martha one-third of the land, her tract adjoining Randolph Odom, Etheldred Martin and the road.
4. John Stephenson [probably Jenkins’ brother] was appointed guardian for Jenkins’ minor children (under the age of 21), Sally, Burkett, Charity, Matilda and Littleberry, who were still minors in 1825. See bond dated March 10, 1825, signed by J. W. Stevenson, Wright Allen and James Daughtry. Burket, Charity and Matilda were still minors in 1827. See item 6 below.
5. An accounting by John, as guardian for Jenkins’ minor children, reports the sale of one slave girl Chery, on December 23, 1815, for $212.25, and the same of another, girl Reany, to James Martin for $175 on December 17, 1816. A report by John on September 1, 1817, states that he held as guardian for Jenkins’ minor children 170 acres of land and 11 slaves, which property remained undivided. A report by John on April 24, 1824, reports the sale of slaves for a total of $535 on behalf of Jenkins’ children, Matilda and Littleberry.
6. At the 1827 December Term of the Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Wade Garris and his wife Sally, Jenkins’ daughter, petitioned for a division of 170 acres of land among the petitioners and Burket, Charity and Matilda Stevenson, represented by John Stevenson their guardian. [It is not apparent why Jenkins’ son Littleberry, if still alive, was not included.]
On July 10, 1828, the land was ordered divided among Burket, Charity, Matilda and Wade Garris (through the right of his wife Sally). The description of the division and a plat show the land adjoined Zaccheus Martin, a branch, Patty’s Delight, Thomas Martin and Benjamin Stevenson.

General Notes: **The following information was taken from Rebecca Leach Ddozier's book, "Twelve Northhampton County, North Carolina Families 1650-1850, published by Gateway Press, INC., Baltimore, MD 2004; page 338:
Arthur ((Abraham(4), Arthur(3), Abraham(2), John Stephenson(1)), a son of Abraham and Mary Jenkins Stephenson, was born around 1779 in Northampton Co., NC. Arthur's first wife was Penelope (Penny) Newsom, who he married before 1812 and probably before 1799(82). His second wife was Cherry Davis, who he married on 4 march 1816(83). On 6 June 1812, Penny's brother Winborne Newsom sold Arthur for $330 three Negroes slaves, one female slave byn the name of Manny, and two slave boys named Cooper and David. When Arthur wrote his will in 1823, he mentioned the male slaves by name, willing them to his children by his first wife Penny. Arthur named in his will his second wife Cherry and the following children, Mary (Polly), David, Winborned, Jesse, Jenny, Elizabeth (Betsy), Abraham, Rebecca (Becky), Littleberry, Tabitha, and Penelope (Penny) Stephenson. According to census records, the last three, Littleberry, Tabitha and Penelope, were born after 1816 and were children of Arthur and Cherry Davis Stephenson. On 14 march 1827 in Northammpton County, Winborne, Jesse, and Abraham Stephenson petitioned for a division of their father's land. Each of them was to receive 58 2/3 acres bounded by Boon's land(84). According to Gilbert T. Stephenson, Arthur lived on land where B. J. Ricks was living at the time his family's history was written. Arthur was buried in his father Abraham Stephenson's private family cemet3ery, which was under cultivated at the time Mr. Stephenson's familly history was being updated in 1950. The cemetery was located between "Hedgspeth Crossroads, (between Conway and Pendleton, but closer to Conway) and Galatia, NC".(85) This place at one time was known as the W. P. Sykes' old home place. Northampton marsriage records found for two of Arthur's children indicated that Mary (Polly) marriaed Noah Futrell on 4 January 1816 and that Abraham Stephenson married Eliza Powell on 1 October 1833 in Northampton County(86). Gilbert T. Stephenson's notes had the following recorded about Arthur Stephenson:
"Arter, 2nd son of Abraham.
Lived where B. J. Ricks lives now. Farmer and slaveholder.
Married 1st Penny Newsom, 2nd ___Davis. Lived near his father.
Children were David (did not marry), Polly (married Noah Futrell),
Jenny (did not marry), Betsy (married Joe Summer),
Becky (did not marry), Abraham (married Eliza Powell),
Winborne (did not marry). Buried at this fathers."
Arthur's children by his first wife Penny Newsom were Mary, David Winborne, Jesse, Jenny, Elizabeth (Betsy), Abraham, and Rebecca (Becky) Stephenson. Arthur's children by his second wife Cherry Davis were Littleberry, Tabitha, and Penelope Stephenson(87).
(82)Northampton Co., NC WB 3, p. 76, Will of Winborne Newsom dated 22 April 1812, mentioned that Penelope Stephenson was his sisteer. Penny's children Winborne and Arthur Stephenson are mentioned in Winborne Newsom's will. Penny's date of marriage was based on the number of children she had before 1815. According to census records Penny had eight children prior to Arthur's marriage to Cherry Davis in 1816. Giving Penny two years between each child, the date of her marriage could have been about 1799.

(85)The source of the cemetery information was the undated notes of Gilbert Stephenson sometime in the 1950's, and at the time the cemetery was under cultivation.
(86)Imgmire, Frances, T., Northampton Co., NC Marriage Records, 1812-1867, p. 47; Northampton Co., NC DB 22, p. 101.
(87)Census records determined parents of children. All children born prior to 1816 should have been Penny Newsom's children. All children born after 1816 should have been Cherry Davis' children.

("Stevenson" seems to be the handwriting of the person writing the will and "Arthur" in a shaky style by a different person, possibly Arthur -- Could this be a deathbed will? John Stephenson is believed to be brother of Arthur.)

Notes for Arthur Stephenson:
Arthur's birth date is estimated based on the assumption that he was at least 21 years old when he appeared as the head of a household in the 1800 Federal Census. See Census Records below.
According to research notes of Gilbert T. Stephenson (date unknown), Arthur lived "where B. J. Ricks lives now" (once known as the W. P. Sykes' place) near his father Abraham. The notes state this property was probably inherited by Delia, the sister of David Newsom Stephenson, and last owned by Viola Stephenson and Carrie Harris, daughters of Mollie Sykes. The notes also state that Arthur is buried with his father Abraham in a private cemetery on the road between Hedgspeth Crossroads (between Conway and Pendleton but nearer Conway) and Galatia. According to the notes, the location of this cemetery was probably under cultivation at the time (1974).
The notes also state that Arthur's children David, Jenny, Becky, and Winborne were never married.

Estate Records:
1. Legal proceedings were brought by Arthur's widow Cherry in the county court to challenge the validity of Arthur's will. A transcript of the proceedings in the 1823 March Term of the court states at a jury that included William Stevenson found that the document purporting to be Arthur's will was not his last will and testament. In a proceeding brought by the executors in the Superior Court of Northampton County, a different jury found that the purported will was Arthur's last will and testament. The will was admitted to probate. [Presumably, Cherry was unhappy with the bequests to her and her three children by Arthur, Littleberry, Tabitha, and Penelope, compared to the bequests to Arthur's other children.]
2. Cherry then petitioned the county court 1823 June Term for her rights of dower stating that she was dissatisfied with the provision made for her in Arthur's will. On August 18, 1823, a jury consisting of John Martin, William Maddry, Jesse Darden, Elias Powell, Drury Nelson, James Daughtery, William Oliver, William Manson, John Gardner, John Futrell, Willie Suiter and Benjamin Boon awarded Cherry a portion of Arthur's land containing 58-2/3 acres adjoining Elias Powell and Benjamin Boon.
3. David Stevenson was appointed guardian for Arthur's son Winbourn, a minor. See bond dated June 3, 1823.
4. James Martin was appointed administrator for the purpose of conducting inventories and sales of property in the estate. See bond dated March 4, 1823.
5. Estate inventories and accountings of estate sales show the estate included, among other property, various farm implements, livestock including 20 sheep, 60 hogs, 2 horses, 10 head of cattle, vegetables including corn, potatoes and peas, cotton, lumber, a grind stone, bacon, beef, lard, a clock, a rug, a buffet, glasses, 3 books, tables, chairs, 4 beds and furniture, pots, earthenware, utensils, 3 packs of cards, a loom, a cubbard, a saddle, soap grease, a cradle, a trumpet, a cart and wheels, cider, 5 quarts of brandy and numerous other items. The estate also included 9 slaves in addition to Aggy.
Persons who bought property at the estate sales included Arthur Davis, David Stephenson, James Martin, Absalom Jenkins, Charles Stephenson, Winborn Buxton Allen and others.
6. Winbourn (through David his guardian), Jesse and Abraham petitioned the county court for a division of the land that Arthur's will provided was to be equally divided among them. On November 27, 1826, arbitrators consisting of Zaccheus Martin, Noah Odom, Willie Lewter, Jesse Darden and James Daughtery allotted the 170 acres of land adjoining Benjamin Boon's land into three tracts of 58-2/3 acres each.
7. In 1822, shortly before Arthur's death, Etheldred Martin (apparently the son of Etheldred Martin whose daughter Rhoda later married Arthur's son Jesse) commenced a slander suit in county court against Arthur claiming damages of $500. [What Arthur allegedly said to slander Etheldred could not be determined from the available records.] A court transcript states that a jury reached a verdict in favor of the plaintiff, but awarded only 38 shillings in damages and assessed costs of the suit of $21.36 against plaintiff. The plaintiff appealed the verdict to the Superior Court; the records do not show the outcome of the appeal but there is no evidence that it was successful. Arthur's brother Benjamin separately sued Etheldred Martin for trespass vi et armis [The nature of the trespass does not appear in the records, but it was probably for some alleged injury to person or property.] Benjamin lost the case, apparently because the statute of limitations had expired.
8. Other litigation. The estate was also involved in other litigation, both as plaintiff and defendant:
(a) Wright Allen obtained a judgment against the estate for debts of $750 and interest plus costs of the suit.
(b) The estate sued Buxton Allen and James Daughtery for debts of $224.
(c) John Fly sued the estate and obtained an execution of judgment against the lands held by the estate for $7.50 with interest plus $2.80 costs. [Interestingly, Zaccheus Martin, a friend of Arthur's family, was the sitting court justice.]
(d) The estate obtained a judgment of $254.63 including costs against Josiah Parker.

I was born in Northampton County in 1929, lived there until the late 1940's and still visit the county often. I am descended from Arthur Stephenson, Benjamin's brother. Their father was Abraham Stephenson who served in the Revoluntionary War. I was raised by my mother's sister who was married to LLoyd Ricks. Lloyd Ricks was the grandson of Elizabeth Susan Stephenson. His father Ben Ricks was raised by his three old maid Aunts and inherited the land that the three Aunts inherited from their Father, Benjamin Stephenson. The deeds of Division of Benjamin Stephenson's land leads me to believe that the home of Ben Ricks was the site of Benjamin Stephenson home.
You might want to go to www.topozone.com and follow the links to the topo map of the Conway, NC area. Go to the 1:25,000 resolution. If you follow the road 1342 which leads northwest you will see the elevation number 107. Across the the road and to the west a few yards you will note the symbol of the house that was the home of Ben Ricks.
Arthur married Penelope (Penny) Newsom about 1799. Penelope died before 1816.

General Notes: **The following information was taken from Rebecca Leach Ddozier's book, "Twelve Northhampton County, North Carolina Families 1650-1850, published by Gateway Press, INC., Baltimore, MD 2004; page 343-345:
Amy and Charles Stephenson, according to family lore, were children of Abraham Stephenson (ca. 1750-ca. 1823), but this researcher (Rebecca Dozier) found only circumstantial and not primary evidence to prove their relationship(114). ............ What is known about Amy is recorded below.
Amy ((Abraham(4), Arthur(3), Abraham(2), John Stephenson(1)), a supposed daughter of Abraham and Mary J. Stephenson(115), was born around 1776 in Northampton Co., NC(116). Circumstantial evidence based on Gilbert t. Stephenson's ancestors' family history, the fact that Amy named one of her sons Stephenson Martin, her husband Thomas Masrtin's relationship with Abraham Stephenson and the Stephenson family in Northampton County's land transactions(117) all provided some evidence that the Amy who married about 1800, and according to Gilbert T. Stephenson's family history, the pair married in Ahoskie, Hertford Co., NC(119). by 1820 they had lliving in their household one male between 16 to 26 years of age, one male 45 years or more (Thomas), four females under 10 years, two females 10-16 years, and one female 26 to 45 years (Amy). They had one son, James, who was born after 1820(120). Amy's death date has not been determined, but supposedly she died around 1832, about three years after her husband. Thomas Martin wrote his will 7 September 1829, and it was probated during Northampton County's December Court in 1829(121). Thomas named his wife Amy and all their children in his will. Amy and Thomas Martin lived near Zion Church, which is about three miles from Conway off of Highway 158 on the road to Creeksville, NC. They were buried near their home. Amy Stephenson and Thomas Martin's children as named in Thomas Martin's will were Stephenson, Dorotha, Mary, Silvy, Marian, Penelope, Amy, and James Thomas Carter Martin. Gilbert T. Stephenson's notes had the following about Amy Stephenson:
"Amy, 1st daughter of Abraham.
Married Jno. Martin. Lived near Zion Church. Children were
Stephenson (Woman from North), Dolly (married Solomon Flythe),
Sylvia (Jack Deberry), Polly (Cagey Garris),
Marian (Joe Britt). Buried at her home."
Note that Gilbert Stephenson recorded that Amy married John Martin instead of Thomas Martin. This fact has been proved to be in error(122).
(114)Abraham Stephenson's sketch is #47 in the main body of the Stephenson Family article.
(115)Prof of Amy being a daughter is based on Gilbert T. Stephenson's family history records. No legal document or Bible has been found proving this daughter-father relationship.
(116)Amy's birth date was based on a study of the Northampton Co., NC census records.
(117)Northampton Co., NC, DB 10, p. 374, and p. 531: Shows Thomas Martin's land bordered Abraham Stephenson's land.
(118)Nortrhampton Co., NC, WB 3, p. 265: Ethedred Martin's will dated 1822: Ethedred Martin named a son Thomas Martin in his will.

This information was obtained from Jeannie Stephenson Stinson:
Comment: No public record has been found that proves that Amy is the daughter of Abraham Stephenson, the patriot. The family legend is that Amy Martin's father was Abraham Stephenson. The notes of Gilbert Stephenson suppoprt this legend but no source has been found for his notes that were written in the 1950s. The notes differ from the public record in places, but are generally correct. Thomas is the husband rather than John, and Thomas's will names children, Amy and James Thomas Carter as children not named in notes.
Marriage: Bond in northampton not identified
Will:
Thomas Martin, dated September 7, 1829, probated December Court, 1829. General Notes: **The following information was taken from Rebecca Leach Dozier's book, "Twelve Northhampton County, North Carolina Families 1650-1850, published by Gateway Press, INC., Baltimore, MD 2004; pages 343, 345-346:
Amy and Charles Stephenson, according to family lore, were children of Abraham Stephenson (ca 1750-ca. 1823), but this researcher, Rebecca Dozier, found only circumstantial and not primary evidence to prove their relationship.(114) What is known about Charles and his descendants is recorded below:
Charles ((Abraham(4), Arthur(3), Abraham(2), John Stephenson(1)), a suppposed son of Abraham and Mary Jenkins Stephenson, was born around 1781 in Northampton Co., NC. Hertford County records show that Charles married Priscilla Newsome and that they lived in Hertford Co., NC(123). In Charles' will that was written 4 December 1836 and probated in February Court, 1837, he mentioned his wife Priscilla and no children's names. Charles left all of his estate to his wife, and at her death or marriage thenit was to be divided among all of his legal heirs. He did not name his heirs. Charles was mentioned in his wife Priscilla Newsome Stephenson's sister Sarah Newsome's Heretford County will,(124) but Sarah did not mention any nieces or nephews that might have been Charles's children. Gilbert T. Stephenson had the following written about Charles Stephenson in his historical papers, but some of this has been proven incorrect:
"Charles, 3rd son of Abraham.
Lived in Hertford County near Ahoskie. Married Miss Bety Newsoms. Farmer and
slaveholder. His children were John (Miss Higgs, 2nd widow in Virginia),
Mary (married Luke McGaughn), Martha (Married William Thomas),
Emily (married a Cowens), Charles (married away from home), Buried
in Hertford."
The reader should note that Mr. Stephenson had "Bety Newsoms" as Charles' wife, but this statement has been proven false because Betty Newsom was married to Lemuel Stephenson(125), whose relationship to Charles is unknown. Mr. Stephenson mentioned that Charles had children, and this was proven true by the 1850 Hertford County Census(126). On this census Priscilla Stephenson was found living with the following children, Sarah Stephenson, John, Martha Stephenson, and Emily Stephenson. The 1850 census also showed that Luke A. McGlohon lived in Hertford County with his wife Mary McGlohon and their four children, William, Annie, Martha, and Charles McGlohon.(127) No other research was done on the children of Charles Stephenson.

Comment: No public record has been found that proves sthat Charles is the son of Abraham Stephenson, the patriot. The notes of Gilbert Stephenson cite Charles as the son of Abraham but no source has been found for this notes that were written in the 1950s. the notes differ from the public record in places, but are generally correct. Wife is Priscilla Newsome rather than Betsey. A Lemuel Stephenson is married to an "Elizabeth" Newsome. Charles and Lemuel may be related. Only a few records have survived the burning of the courthouse during the Civil War making confirmation of this family difficult or near impossible.
Census:
1850: Hertford County, NC, page 324, Dwelling 183, Southern District, on 8/29/1850, Priscilla Stevenson 53, farmer, Sarah 30, John 25, martha 21, Emily 19.

Note: The 1850 Hertford County census shows a Luke McGlohon age 58 and wife nancy 54, living at dwelling 175, Southern District and also listing for a Lemuel Newsom, indicating that Charles Stevenson, Luke McGlohon and the Newsom families were living in the same in the same neighborhood. In the year 2000, a Chester McGlohon and Douglas McGlohon are living Ahoskie.

Note: The following note of gilbert Stephenson states that Charles's wife was Betty Nesoms rather than Priscilla. Gilbert's note is believedd to be in error. Priscilla Stevenson was a Newsome--and in Sarah Newsome's will she callaed Priscilla a "Stevenson" and also called another sister Elizabeth a "Stevenson". Elizabeth was married to A Lemuel Stevenson. She didn't mention any nieces or nephews in her will. Same cite as above, page 59).

Notes for Charles Stephenson:
A record documenting that Charles was a son of Abraham (d. 1823) has not been found. This information, other than the records described below and the name of Charles' wife. Priscilla Newsom, was taken from research notes of Gilbert T. Stephenson (date unknown); not been independently verified. According to the notes, Charles lived in Hertford County near Ahoskie. In addition, a Charles Stephenson appears at estate sales recorded in the estate records of Jenkins and Arthur Stephenson, as does John Stephenson, a brother of Jenkins and Arthur. Charles and John also appear as witnesses to deeds involving Arthur. These facts strongly suggest that he was a close relative, and probably the brother, of Jenkins and Arthur. See Notes for Jenkins and Notes for Arthur.
Charles' birth date is estimated based on the 1820 Federal Census. See Census Records below.

I also constitue and appoint my wife Priscilla Stevens as sole executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other and former wills by me at any time heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the twenty fourth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty six. General Notes: Information in the 1850 US Census Northampton, NC confirms the year of his birth.
Another paper I have indicates that Henry Stephenson (son of Benjamin) was not named in Benjamin's will (dated July 1873). Henry Stephenson not being named in the will tends to confirm his death prior to the division of Benjamin's property.
**The following information was taken from Rebecca Leach Ddozier's book, "Twelve Northhampton County, North Carolina Families 1650-1850, published by Gateway Press, INC., Baltimore, MD 2004; page 339:
Benjamin (Abraham(4), Arthur(3), Abraham(2), John Stephenson(1)), a son of Abraham and Mary Jenkins Stephenson was born around 1788 in Northampton Co., NC. Tradition says that Benjamin married twice. If true, then his first wife is unknown, but his second wife was Edith Jenkins(88), whom he married about 1825(89). On 10 May 1810, Benjamin's father Abraham deeded him a "deed of gift" of a 170 acres(90). Then on 30 May 1823, Benjamin received another 170 acres of land from his father Abraham "for love and affection". Later Benjamin was found on the 1850 census with his wife Edith, several younger children, and two of this grandchildren, Henry and John Flythe, children of Benjamin's daughter Sarah. In 1873, Benjamin died in Northampton Co., NC.(91). He named nine children in his will, five by his first wife and four by Edith Jenkins Stephenson(92). Gilbert T. Stephenson had the following written about Benjamin Stephenson:
"Ben, 4th son of Abraham.
Lived in the field where B. J. Ricks lives. Farmer, 20 slaves.
Good education. Children were Henry (did not marry, died at home and buried there...24 years old).
Patia (married Henry Everett--only child named Thomas, died at 18).
Jenkins (married Tabitah Britton. Children Salllie, Tump, Ben, Nathan, Eliza Ann, Sam).
Salllie (married Dred Flythe. Children Henry and John)"
Children by Benjamin and his unknown first wife were Patience, Jenkins, Sarah, Emily and Henry Stephenson. Benjamin's children by his second wife, Edith Jenkins, were Edith, Mary, Susan, and John Stephenson(93).
(88)Death Ceretificate, Thomas Boon Stephenson, Book 160, p. 22, NC Archives; This death ceretificates states that Thomas Boon Stephenson was 89 years old when he died in 1916.
