Other:
Summary of a conversation with Martha Lou Stephenson on January 25, 2000. Martha Lou was raised in pendleton as a child, left and has returned to live near Pendleton: She remembers both Viola and her sister, Carrie Harris. She describes Viola Stephenson as being very smart, musically talented, somewhat eccentric, short of statute, plump and rather dumpy, and had a disability which caused her to limp. Viola sweemed to have sufficient income to be well dressed and to drive a large up to date car. She was the organist at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church for years and gave private piano lessons in her home. In fact Martha Lou took piano lessons from her and remembers that Viola and her sister, Carrie, had lots of extremely fine antique furniture in their home. Viola belonged to the Music Club and was an avid and smart bridge player. She was well liked and well known in the community and her church. Carrie did not seem to be as smart as Viola and followed Viola's lead. Late in her life, Viola married a man named, Rossie Layton, who was not from the area. Carrie in turn married a friend of Rossie Layton. As a part of Roberts Chapel's one hundred and fify year celebration, the Church made improvements to the cemetery and made a census of the graves. They were not able to find Viola's grave nor Carrie's. They could not remember whether she was buried there or at home. Martha thinks that they are probably buried in the cemetery and not having any close relatives other than their new husbands, no marker was ever bought.
Viola married James Rossie Layton on 15 Nov 1958. James was born in 1911.
Mary next married James M. Burgess on 17 Feb 1909. James was born in 1880.

PENDLETON \emdash Martha Lou Stephenson, a rare and formidable Southern woman who loved any excuse to be outdoors, died March 6 at her home in Pendleton. She was 85.
A wildly entertaining storyteller, Martha Lou majored in English at Meredith College and remained an avid reader who appreciated a well-turned phrase. She was an exceptional gardener, refinisher of furniture and scavenger of junk-store treasures. She also played a mean game of Scrabble, made cussing sound like poetry and spoke a special language with animals.
And throughout the highs and lows of her life, she remained a loving mother who indulged her children's passions and treated each of their minor achievements as a major triumph.
The youngest of four children, Martha Lou was born and reared in Pendleton, where she refused to sit still long enough to play dolls with her sister. No sooner had the doll house been set up than she ran outside to help her father with chores, a parade of dogs and cats at her heels.
Blessed with long limbs and boundless energy, she was a standout basketball player at Severn High School.
As an undergraduate at Meredith, she became a disciple of Dr. Norma Rose, joined the Colton English Club, served on the newspaper staff of the Twig and played varsity softball and varsity basketball.
Following her graduation in 1950, Martha Lou worked at the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh and wrote copy for WPTF radio station.
More than three decades of married life took her to Las Vegas; Mt. Clemens, MI, Birchington-on-Sea, England; Ramstein, Germany; Sherman, Texas; Goldsboro, NC; Goose Bay, Labrador; Austin, TX; and Oxon Hill, MD. But the only place Martha Lou truly called home was Pendleton, where she returned in 1985 for the remaining 29 years of her life.
In this latter phase of life, she threw her energies into renovating a 19th century farmhouse, infusing its interior with vibrant splashes of color and singular furnishings. But she spent more time in her yard than in her living room, mowing the lawn, pulling up weeds, pruning trees, tending to her rose garden and only rarely sitting down to survey the fruits of her labor.
Martha Lou also served on the Northampton County Board of Elections and was a member of Roberts Chapel Baptist Church.
She is survived by son William S. Clarke III and son-in-law Douglas J. Martin of New York, NY; daughter Elizabeth S. Clarke of Washington, DC; sister Edith S. Simpson of Raleigh; sister-in-law Ann Stephenson of Henrico, NC; nieces, Martha Stephenson of Radford, Va. and Carla Robinson of Atlanta; nephews Steve Simpson of Raleigh and Russell Stephenson of Wake Forest; and former husband William S. Clarke Jr. of Raleigh.
The service will be held at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church in Pendleton Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by visitation.

General Notes: From Robert Lee Bowling, Jr. information December 2018
Lodwick had a child named Caroline by a prior marriage. Bessie and Lodwick had one child.
The family story is that Bess was born out of wedlock and was raised by an unknown woman in Plymouth, NC. She did not show up in the Bertie, NC census until she was 4 years old. It is told that the Masons in the area, to whom her father was a member, met with her father and gave him an ultimatum to "do the honorable thing" and marry her mother.
Actually, her father and mother were married before she was born and the Masons probably had a lot to do with making him do the right thing. Bess's mother Bessie Stephenson was 8 months pregnant and living in Winton, NC with her sister Mary Ellen (Molly) Stephenson. Besse's father was living on his farm in Woodward, NC (then it was called Cashie Neck). After the confrontation with the Masons, Bob married Bess's mother on 4 September 1891. Bess was born on 23 Oct 1891. It seems that she lived with her sister aunt Molly until she was about 4 years old when Molly brought her down to the farm and told per parents that it was time for her to live with the family.

Samuel Walter Stephenson
by Lila Murphree and Mamie Martin (Sisters to Mrs. Stephenson)
Taken from History of Dickens County, by Fred Arrington, 1971, pp. 325-326
At the age of 26, Walter Stephenson came from Woodruff County, Arkansas, by train to Quannah, Texas, then traveled on the mail hack on to Tap, Texas in Dickens County. From Tap he rode three miles on horseback to the home of Clint Garrett where he claimed as his bride the second daughter of Mr. Garrett, a pioneer of Dickens County.
The wedding ceremony was performed November 15, 1905, after Walter and Annie had ridden four miles on horseback to the home of a friend and minister of the gospel, W. E. Cross, in the Red-mud community.
Annie had expected a few close friends to be present for her wedding, but was surprised when they got in sight of the preacher's house to see the whole countryside dotted with buggies and horsebackers. There were many congratulations and good-bys exchanged that day. For in a few days Walter was to return with his young bride to Augusta, Arkansas to make their home.
The second year of the Mr. And Mrs. Stephenson's marriage a little ray of sunshine came into their lives, little Bennie was born to their pride and joy for six short years. Then, God chose him to join his little angels.
Annie never could accept Arkansas as their home, so in a few years, they brought their three older children, Edna, Annie Grace, and Nath to west Texas to live, and lived the first few years on a farm eight miles west of Spur.
Walter also brought along an Uncle Ben Stephenson to live with them, but the west didn't appeal to Ben, so he soon returned to his old home in Woodruff County, Arkansas, near Grays to live.
Opportunities seemed better on the plains to Walter, so he bought a farm two miles east of McAdoo, where the other children were born (except John, he had been born west of Spur). Jim, Lucille, Charlie and Robena were born and reared. Nath still operates the farm.
Some of the close neighbors were: the Hickmans, Formbys, Bartons, Pullens, Eldridges, Ethridges, Cyphers, McLaughlins, Tookes, and Mr. Rumfield and others.
Mr. And Mrs. Stephenson spent most of their life in helping others. In the twenties his brother Vick, became ill and Walter thought the West may be a more suitable climate for Vick, so persuaded Vick and his family to move to McAdoo on a farm so he could assist in his illness. With Walter's large family and Vick's large family, he had a large crew of farmers. Vick's family later moved to Ft. Worth, except two daughters Helen and Annie T. had married Dickens County boys and are residents of Dickens County.
Again when his half-brother Jim Garrett became ill in Arkansas, he moved him west to McAdoo in hopes of better health conditions. He spent his remaining days in Walter's home and he is buried in the McAdoo cemetery.
He also gave three orphaned nephews the Yarbrough boys, Jenk, Minor and Marvin, home for a time, and Mrs. Stephenson's niece Rachel Johnson spent a school term in their home in the early 1920s.
As mentioned before, Mr. Stephenson was a cotton farmer and during the harvest season, in those days, all cotton was picked by hand, so many families would stop by to pick cotton in the fall of the year. It will be remembered that one year a family by the name of Waldrop, picked during a season when they left their little five-year-old boy, Roland with them. Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson gave him a home and sent to school and reared him to be grown. They treated him like their own and Roland loved them dearly. Their eight children are (Edna) Mrs. M. J. McCoy, Lubbock; (Annie Grace) Mrs. Carmie Findley, Port Lavaca; Nath, McAdoo; John, California; Jim, Paducah; (Lucille) Mrs. Kermit Stanley, Paducah; Charlie, Lubbock; and (Robena) Mrs. Bamey Watts, Lubbock.
As a boy, Mr. Stephenson's one desire was to be a doctor, and he was in school studying medicine when his father passed away. He was of great assistance to his neighbors and family in assisting with minor illnesses for doctors were farapart and scarce in the early days.
Mr. Stephenson was a talented musician, one of the best old time fiddlers in this area. Some of his children followed in his footsteps. He had a string band of this own. Mrs. Stephenson had a beautiful voice. In the early days, neighbors and friends gathered in their home for an evening of music, singing and fun. Their home was well known for its gracious hospitality and never a dull moment there.
Mr. Stephenson was a Methodist, Mrs. Stephenson a member of the Church of Christ. Both remained true to their faith.
They are buried in the McAdoo cemetery.

Samuel married Henrietta (Nettie) Lee Watson Cariker, daughter of William Pinkney Watson and Henrietta Reid Adams, 16 or 18 Apr 1902. Henrietta was born on 18 Mar 1877 in Arkansas, died in 1903 in McCrory, Woodruff County, Arkansas at age 26, and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, McCrory, Arkansas. Another name for Henrietta was Nettie Carriker. {FSID: LZGH-9PK}
General Notes: Robena McCoy Tooke gave me this information (which I think is accurate), but I found on the internet in the Joyce (Jones) Logue family tree her as Netttie Cariker. Could she have been married before or is this just a mistake since Samuel Walter Stephenson's mother's name was Cariker? See below for the answer.
From Terrie Treadway (June 14, 2004): Walter Cariker married Fannie Watson on Aug 29, 1890. Fannie died Feb 22, 1894 of swamp fever (maleria). Then he married Henrietta (Nettie) Lee Watson (sister to Fannie) Sept 29, 1894. Then Walter died on January 29, 1901. On April 16, 1902 Nettie Lee married Samuel Walter Stephenson. Sometime in 1903 Nettie Lee died of maleria and later their daughter Maggie Lou Stephenson died of maleria. Maggie was probably no more than 6 months old at the time of her death. It is believed that Fannie and Nettie are are buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, in McCrory, but do not have tombstones to Terrie's knowledge. They are buried close to the tripple grave of Henrietta Reid Adams, Samuel Frederick Adams, and Etta Cariker.
The child from this marriage was:
348 F i. Maggie Lou Stephenson was born in 1903 in Woodruff County, Arkansas, died in 1904 in Woodruff County, Arkansas at age 1, and was buried in Stephenson Cemetery.
General Notes: Probably buried in an unmarked grave in the Stephenson Cemetery near Revels, Arkansas, Woodruff County. She was probably no more than 6 months old and died of maleria, like her mother had shortly before.
Samuel next married Annie Marinda Elizabeth Garrett, daughter of William Clinton Garrett and Malinda Ann Jones, on 15 Nov 1905 in Dickens County. Annie was born on 19 Jan 1889 in Red Mud, Dickens County, Texas, USA, died on 3 Aug 1962 in Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas, USA at age 73, and was buried in McAdoo Cemetery, McAdoo, Dickens County, Texas, USA. {FSID: K8HX-46W, FGID: 44222477}

General Notes: Mamie and Vick Stephenson
taken from the book “Dickens County-It's Land and People”
Copyright 1986, page 534
My mother, Mamie Pollard was born in Woodruff County, Arkansas, January 16, 1890 to Etta Gibson Pollard and Charles Benjamin Pollard, who moved to Arkansas at the close of the Civil War. Two other children, a son Bob and a daughter Ruth, died in early childhood. When Mama was 5 her father died.
My father, Vick Stephenson was born march 18, 1880 to Margaret Carriaker and Samuel Charles Stephenson. His mother was Pennsylvania Dutch German. Her parents moved south around 1840 to Woodruff county. His father came from Northampton County, North Carolina because of unrest caused by carpet baggers. They had 3 sets of twins, all who died before they were 10 of yellow fever and small pox. Other children in the family were Annie, Edna, Walter and Victor (Vick).
Mama and Dad married November 10, 1904 in Augusta, Arkansas. They made their home in Revels Community until 1925, but because of Mama's health and at the suggestion of the doctor, moved to a higher and drier climate, Dickens County, Texas, where Dad's brother, Walter and his wife Annie Garrett Stephenson lived. Their 8 children and the 8 of us: Sam, Helen, Annie T., Gilbert, Howard, Robert, Vance, and Rosalyn grew up as close as brother and sisters. We spent many happy times at their house where Uncle Walter entertained us with his fiddle playing. We had lots of musical talent in the family, the kind that was fun to share with each other.
We had only been in Texas 4 years when Dad became ill with a nerve disease that over a period of 8 years left him totally paralyzed from the waist down. In 1938, when Dr. Nichols told them he could do nothing more to help, they moved to Fort Worth hoping a new treatment might help, but on January 6, 1941, he went home to be with the Lord.
Mama lived until May 21, 1969. She, too, was faithful to the task the Lord had given her. She canned, sewed, worked far int the night doing for Dad and her children, trying to train us in the ways of the lord. Thank you, Lord, for the precious gift of our parents.

Victor married Mamie Pollard, daughter of Charles Benjamin Pollard and Amy Etta Gibson, on 10 Nov 1904 in Augusta, Arkansas. Mamie was born on 16 Jan 1890 in Augusta, Woodruff County, Arkansas, USA, died on 21 May 1969 in Crosbyton, Crosby County, Texas, USA at age 79, and was buried in Afton Cemetery. {FGID: 10205203}
General Notes: Mamie Pollard was born in Woodruff County, Arkansas, January 16, 1890 to Etta Gibson Pollard and Charles Benjamin Pollard, who moved to Arkansas at the close of the Civil War. Two other children, a son Bob and a daughter Ruth, died in early childhood. When Mamie was 5 her father died.
She married Vick Stephenson November 10, 1904 in August, Arkansas. Vick was born March 18, 1880 to Margaret Carriaker and Samuel Charles Stephenson. His mother was Pennsylvania Dutch German. Her parents moved south around 1840 to Woodruff County. His father came from North Hampton County, NC because of the unrest caused by carpet-baggers. They had 3 sets of twins, all who died before they were 10 of yellow fever and small pox. Other children in the family were Annie, Edna, Walter and Vick.
Mamie and Vick made their home in Revels Community until 1925, but because of Mamie´s health and at the suggestion of the doctor, moved to a higher and drier climate, Dickens County, where Vick´s brother, Walter and his wife Annie Garrett Stephenson lived. Their 8 children and Vick and Mamie´s 8: Sam, Helen, Annie T., Gilbert, Howard, Robert, Vance and Rosalyn grew up as close as brothers and sisters. They spent many happy times at their house where their Uncle Walter entertained them with his fiddle playing. Lots of musical talent in the family, the kind that was fun to share with each other.
Vick and Mamie had only been in Texas 4 years when Vick became ill with a nerve disease that over a period of 8 years left him totally paralyzed from the waist down. In 1938, when Dr. Nichols told them he could do nothing more to help, they moved to Fort Worth hoping a new treatment might help, but on January 6, 1941, Vick passed away to be with the Lord.
Mamie lived until May 21, 1969. She, too, was faithful to the task of the Lord had given her. She canned, sewed, worked far into the night doing for Vick and her children, trying to train them in the ways of the Lord.
